Our History

The Story

With a desire to experience the rhythm and pace of rural life more closely, we began putting down roots in the Alentejo in 2009. It was at Herdade da Burquilheira, on the outskirts of the historic village of Alcáçovas, and within the landscape that surrounds it, that we found our place and began to feel at home.

Since then, the estate has become a place in constant transformation, where agriculture, nature and rural life coexist.

We began by acquiring a small herd of Limousin cattle, whose first cows are now the matriarchs of our herd.

We worked the land and planted 12 hectares of Picual olive groves, which today give rise to our Amante Extra Virgin Olive Oil, deeply connected to the landscape and territory of the Alentejo.

From the beginning, we have sought to preserve the natural landscape, respect the local heritage and restore the existing buildings without losing their identity. Monte da Burquilheira was carefully restored, breathing new life into the main house, Casa da Mãe and our country house, where we welcome friends and guests wishing to discover the tranquillity and authenticity of the Alentejo.

The former Poldril da Burquilheira, where foals raised on the estate were once weaned, was also rebuilt and transformed into a modern equestrian centre dedicated to the training and breeding of sport horses.

Today, Herdade da Burquilheira continues to grow and evolve, while preserving the same connection to the land, nature and the Alentejo landscape that first brought us here.

The Message

2019 was a year of decisions and change. We decided to reduce our ecological footprint and convert all agricultural activity on the estate to organic farming. This conversion process was completed at the end of 2021 and, since then, all our agricultural production has been certified organic, promoting a more sustainable and balanced cycle based on respect for the land and the preservation of nature.

We invite you to visit us, discover the rhythm of rural life and listen, slowly and quietly, to the silence of Herdade da Burquilheira.
